The very first time I saw Waltari was 1996 in a huge festival in Finland. I had just recently got to know the band properly and I loved their brand new album ”Big Bang!” which was new kind of music to me (and many others too) in metal genre. Their stage presence was already full of energy and metal feeling. The show was absolutely great so I had high hopes for tonights anniversary show in legendary Nosturi Club.
I knew what I wanted to hear and had a few particular song in my mind I was hoping to hear. After all, it was a night of celebration for a band that had twisted and developed metal scene from the year of 1986. Waltari has mixed succesfully heavy metal with many other genres including pop, techno, folk, opera and even ballet so this night was going to be special.
They were going to play a few hour long setlist so they started very early. I was there to witness early performances from various guest musicians who did nice job palying their own songs as an homage to Waltari but also there were some younger bands playing songs of Waltari, such as the erotic masterpiece ”Follow Me Inside”. Between other bands Waltari came in stage and played stuff from early years. I was really glad they played their legendary ”Pala Leipää” and ”Sillanpää/Bridge End”. Waltari frontman Kärtsy Hatakka was in a really good mood and you got to admire his capabality to sing high and low notes with occasional screaming and growling. What a versatile of voices.
One of the highlights was when mixed group of members from Amorphis, Swallow the Sun, HIM, Kreator and Waltari played the song ”Curiosity”. Also Eicca and Mikko from Apocalyptica joined the stage on ”I’m Not Jesus”. I actually lost count at some point with all the visitors and other performers. I needed to remind myself this was a special show. During normal nights Waltari doesn’t need any guest musicians on stage. They can rock any place in a world out of it’s misery when others are just on their way. Maybe only low point on this night was constantly changing people on stage but it was still acceptable on this special evening. There were some songs missing what I was hoping to hear but on the other hand I had the change to hear songs they don’t usually play.
The whole evening was about this crazy metalband who had witnessed all the changes of music industry, released over 10 albums, toured the world and honestly done some improvements to the whole genre of heavy metal. During this night we had the chance to see this band in action with their best friends from their career. I left the show with a smile on my face, hoping to see them again after another 25 years…
