Who would guess Metallica would ever release anything with great substance again? Metal giants have been for 30 years now under pressure and immense scrutiny and have often given critics a field day with albums like “LULU” and “St. Anger” crashing under the gates. 8 years in the making (albeit recorded within a space of just few months), “Hardwired…To Self-Destruct” sees Metallica return to focus with an album that while being way too long and still bearing much of the maligned 1990’s sound, still contains the best material group have released since 1991’s “Black” record. The whole first disc is top quality with “Atlas! Rise”, “Halo Of Fire” and “Moth Into Flame” particulary impressive. Second disc is flawed but ends with excellent fashion with “Spit Out The Bone.” It might be pushing to say Metallica still reign at the top of the thrash tree but “Hardwired…” flushes down most of the bloated albums of their past two decades and suppose for a band of their stature that is more than enough.
