My older brother listened a lot on Priest when he was a teenager and me still a little kid (I’m 31 now). That introduced me to your fantastic music. Best wishes to you and the rest of the guys in the band.

Now some questions:

1) How is it to write music nowadays after having made so much during the years? Is it more difficult to get the inspiration and creativity flowing? Has the new upcoming album been a certain challenge in terms of new ideas and creativity?

2) What’s your methodology when composing new material – do you get together with Rob and Glenn and start from ground zero so to speak in terms of ideas, or do you have an “official” pre-writing period when all of you individually try to come up with new ideas before you meet initially to write material for a new record?

3) In the superb Diamonds and Rust song, a part of the lyrics in the second verse goes like: “hearing the voice I’d known A couple of light years ago …”. Since “light year” is a measurement of distance, not time (it’s obviously referring to a long time ago), the verse phrase is a little bit strange (or is it perhaps English slang to say so?). In this case JP is not responsible behind the lyrics (as it’s a Joan Baez song). However, when composing lyrics, do you (or Rob perhaps since he’s writing them as I understand) put effort to not make them sound too silly or too overwhelmed?

4) Going on tour like you’re about to do this year, must be (I reckon) a huge apparatus in terms of determining where to perform, stage setup, carry around all the equipment, set up and take down all equipment at the venues, travelling logistics etc. How many people are involved during the tour? Do you have two stage setups, so that while you’re playing at one venue, there are people working on putting up the stage for the next gig?

5) I saw you on the Retribution tour in Oulu in Finland, February 2005 (have you by the way ever played so far north before?). It was an amazing show! I was really impressed by the attitude you guys had: you were in the northern Lapland at a rather small venue (max. capacity of approx. 5000 people), it was -25 degrees outside and it was Monday evening. Quite the opposite to a warm summer Saturday evening at an outside venue with 40 000 metal maniacs. Do you ever feel that a gig is “another day at the work”. I thought that the Oulu show could be like that. How wrong I was. You didn’t at all show that another-day-at-work feeling. You came on stage and totally kicked ass. You didn’t just play the songs; you did it with passion, energy and everything else metal is all about.

6) How much do you rehearse before a tour? Do you determine the set list before the start of the rehearsals, or do you rehearse a number of songs and compose a set list out of those songs?

7) As I understand (conclusions drawn from various interviews) you’re about to play whole of (and nothing but) the new album on the upcoming summer tour. Are you going to perform a new tour with JP classics after the Nostrodamus tour?

8) Do you feel that in the present information society, people require to have new information as soon as possible? With internet you can present every single step taken forward in the progress of writing a new album. I get the impression that you (JP) go the other way: you reveal almost nothing about what’s happening. Other bands present almost every step that they make, put new songs onto the web etc. I can’t say that it’s wrong to be very secret, but it’s a contrast to the enormous possibility to present information.

Finally a pure guitar playing question:

9) I play the guitar myself, and discovered early the huge difference in the difficulty level regarding to play solos and to play riffs. Do you have any tip on how to learn to play solos? It’s almost impossible (also very tedious) to learn a solo from tabs. I guess the best thing is to recognise the structure of the solo (what scale it is and so forth) and pick it out from there. This means that you have to master many scales. But then I wonder how guys like Glenn does it: he says in an interview that he never plays out from any scale. This means that you have to have a perfect pitch and a tremendous ability to play by ear.

With bests regards,

Lars Westerberg
Hi Lars,
1. Actually I found coming up with ideas was easier on the album because it is different to our usual approach that being a concept album with lots cool content to tap into from the enigmatic Nostradamus.
2.The pre-writing approach is the one we always take ,then we get together and decide what is strong and not so strong.
3.We defiantly take a lot of pride in our lyrics, it is very important to us that our fans can totally understand and relate to them.
4.There have been occasions when we have had a need to duplicate everything in order to make gigs happen. It varies from tour to tour how many people we take on tour but I guess it usually between 20 and 30.
5.Actually we played the festival of the Midnight Sun somewhere in Lapland in the 70’s.(Editor’s note: Oulu, Finland summer 1977,you can see pictures of this show in Steel Mill Judas Pix – section) with the climax blues band and a band called Caravan. It was really cool, and yes we take every gig just as seriously as the next. It is totally in our D.N.A.
6.We try not to over rehearse so as to keep things fresh,we usually decide on the bulk of the songs beforehand but if someone makes a suggestion we will give it a go.
7.For the moment we are planning to tour with classics but with some Nostradamus, then possibly tour again playing the entire Nostradamus spectacle.
8.Yes maybe a lot of bands think that doing it that way they get more exposure but I prefer to do it the old way because I remember the excitement that I had when rushing to the store to buy a record that I had been waiting so eagerly for and playing it for the first time. It was such a rush, by giving people updates nearly every day somehow takes the excitement away for me. Also just making the record takes us more hours in the day than we have.
9.Good subject this one. I prefer to know exactly what I am doing musically. To be proficient at soloing you do as you say have to master scales but also you have to be able to analyze the backing track to find out what scales you can include in your playing. Having said that I do like to play solos that don’t rely so heavily on scales but more on feel like Hendrix, Trower, Paul Kossoff etc. When I do this I am usually thinking no further than natural miner, the blues scale and pentatonic after all, those were the mainstay scales of guitarists of that period. Thanks a lot Lars you owe me a beer for that when you see me, don’t forget!
Regards K.K.

Craig Crofoot, Rochester, Minnesota: My question has to do with the song “Death Row”. Whose voice is it that we hear indicating the man’s death sentence is to be carried out?
