I’m a long time Judas Priest fan and guitar player and I have 3 questions for you:
1. At the end of your Painkiller solo, when Halford screams it’s very hard to hear what notes you are playing. Does the solo end before that or what?
2. In the Hellrider solo, before you and Glenn play the interlude section, you play this bit that sounds like sweep picking. How is that played?
3. Do you have any plans of releasing a Signature model in the future? And if so will there be a more affordable version (like ESP LTD sort of thing). And if not, is there any current guitar model out there that is close to one of yours?
Thanks for your time!
Hi Garric. Yes Rob has started to do one of his infamous screams over my solo but you can check what it should be on the album. You are right about the sweep picking but I would struggle to tell you how to do it in this response. However, it’s all in e-minor. I have new guitars now made by KxK guitars in San Diego, have 2 at the moment. I think the makers would be prepared to hand-make you one but you would have to speak to them
Regards K.K.

Christian, Sweden:

Hi K.K.!

First off – Thanks for being better than ever! Words cannot describe how inspiring it is, both as a guitarist and as a headbanger in general, to see you for example playing the ‘Sinner’ solos in 2008. Incredible! Me and my girlfriend saw you six times in June and it seemed those solos were just getting wilder by each and every night. Too bad we didn’t get to meet you. We actually saw you on your way from the hotel to the tour bus in Ostrava, but didn’t want to disrupt you as we kind of guessed you were in a hurry. Next time…

A question that has stuck with me for a long time is why a concert at Konserthuset (Stockholm, Sweden) was cancelled in 1981? It was supposed to be held on March 8th and was to be the last gig of the European spring tour. As far as I know all the other concerts on this leg of the tour went on, but not the one in Sweden. It would be interesting to know as it was supposed to be the first Priest concert in Sweden (if you didn’t play here in your pre-‘Rocka Rolla’-days, that is). I have tried to look in old papers from 1981, asked on different internet forums, asked the organizer (EMA Telstar), but everything concerning this gig is so obscure. No-one knows anything.
I guess it’s really hard for you to remember this one concert among a million, but maybe there’s some old scratch book or something laying around, concealing this secret, hehe…

A thing I have noticed on ‘Nostradamus’ is that you’ve somewhat developed your playing style even more, and added some “shredding” parts in the solos; is there any special story about this or is it just that you felt that this style suits the majestic sounds of a rock opera more than a “usual” Priest album?

All the best!
Hi Christian. Sorry but it was so long ago. I will ask the question but I do not have too much hope. With my soloing I always try to do what suits the material best but I am often torn between what I like best – that’s add lib stuff like “Sinner” etc. – and more faster controlled stuff like “One Shot At Glory” etc. Also I like to invent some new things that are unique to me. Thanks for the strong support this summer!
Regards K.K.

Jak:

Hi K.K.!! First of all, I want to thank you for being such an inspiration to me. I’ll never forget when I was listening to our friends in a JP tribute and it drove us to buy a CD (I’m sorry, I’m young, I wasn’t familiar at all with you guys) and after buying the double disc essential, it was only two months later we bought 12 more albums, haha! Trying to figure out what you and Glenn did would be so much fun, having easy rocking tunes and then blast full backup vocals and effects would be a challenge. But dangit, on “Painkiller” album, there’s a sound that is the first thing on your second lead run part of “Metal Meltdown,” it sounds like there’s a weird tongue-roll effect your guitar does or it sounds like a really mean huge bird chirping at exactly 3:01 timing. When I heard it, my jaw dropped and I wanted to MAKE THAT SOUND!! It’s so cool! You also do it on an “Angel Of Retribution” song I think. Please tell me how did you do that? My singer and I bought backstage passes for Glenn Helen at California, so I cannot wait to meet you and Glenn. Thanks so much!
Hi Jak. I just had a quick listen and they are split octaves combined with the whammy bar, not so difficult. Hope you enjoyed the show.
Regards K.K.

Tom Cedzyński, Poland:

Hi K.K.

I have been your great fan for a few years. I’m writing to you cause there are a few things I’d like to let you know. First, I was at the concert in Ostrava, the Czech Republic which was on 17.6.2008. I was one of the people who were waving Polish flag close to the stage. When you were standing and thanking everybody before the “Hell Bent For Leather” I threw the flag with “Judas Priest” sign on it (I had made it myself especially for you) at you. You caught it and showed it to the fans. I would like to thank you for that on behalf of all Polish fans. It meant a lot to us. We are very proud of what you have done. Could I ask you to take a photo of yourself or yourself and the rest of the group while holding the Polish flag? If you sent it to me I would make it available to all Polish fans. We would be really grateful. My parents took some photos of a good quality as well and I think one of them would look good on your European Tour 2008 Photos section of the official JP website. Once again I would like to thank you for what you have done for Polish fans. I’m waiting for your answer.
Hi Tom. I will see what I can do, if not we are hoping to tour Europe including Poland in February so maybe we could fix up something again. With the photos I will ask Jari to post them on the Steel Mill and if he could send them to JP.com also.
Regards K.K.

Dave:

Hi, been a lifelong Priest fan for all of my 21 years! It was then that he asked his boss if he could work on the rest of the album with us. I was wondering, if I may, ask a little more personal questions? Where do you spend your down time and what do you usually do? I have this very old magazine which has an interview with you and it says that you like golf, tennis and fast cars. We seem more than ever to spend too much time working, opening bills and junk mail, taxing and insuring the car, going to the supermarket etc. etc. And doesn’t it seem to take forever these days to get anything done? Anyway I am fortunate to have lots of fields and woodland with lakes and streams that I just like to go walking in and through even when it’s raining just to savour what nature has given us. But as you say I am quite the sporty type also and I like to cook and to be honest I don’t mind mowing the lawn or driving a tractor or even painting the garden shed. So to sum it up I think I enjoy doing everything, nothing really seems to be a chore as long as I am not standing in a line.
Regards K.K.

Mario Saucedo, San Antonio, TX:

Hey K.K., my name is Mario and I’ve been a Priest fan as long as I can remember. I’ve read that you used the piranha on the album and I spent months tracking down the preamp and now many hours tweaking the thing but it never sounds quite right. Do you remember what settings you used? I’m also a big fan of the flying v and that red mini v you used in the “Painkiller/Burn In Hell” video is the coolest guitar I’ve ever seen. I did not use the Piranha until the “Jugulator” tour so I guess I was still using my Pete Cornish rig which is basically a range master treble boost going into the top right low gain channel of a fifty watt Marshall.
