\nWith an array of classic albums first with Warlock and later with her solo project as well as the energetic live performances, the title of undisputed Queen of Heavy Metal belongs to Doro Pesch. Capable of rocking the audience with all-out metal anthems and soothing them with some of the most beautiful ballads in metal, there really aren’t anyone quite like her. In the heat of Sauna Open Air festival, Steel Mill’s Jari and Kimmo had a chance to meet up with Doro and conduct an interview.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We would like to start<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

this interview with a small nostalgic trip back to 1986, because that was the first Priest gig for the both of us. Warlock opened the show, and Helsinki was the last concert on the European leg. How do you remember that?<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s cool, was it really the last show? It was really a dream come true for me, because I was a big Priest fan like you\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

When I started in my first band, it was 1980, Priest was the state of the art, they were our idols. The day when we heard we will tour together, that was actually the day I quit my job. I had a job as a graphic artist, and when I heard we\u2019re gonna go on tour with Priest, I went to my boss and said \u201dYou know, I\u2019m quitting my job \u2019cause I\u2019m going on tour with Judas Priest\u201d, and he said \u201dWhat is that?\u201d. Of course he had no clue about metal, and I told him that it\u2019s the best, the biggest metal band, and I have to do this. \u201dAre you crazy?\u201d, \u201dYes but I gotta do it\u201d. Then he said \u201dOk, I wish you all the good luck, but you have to promise me to do good, and never come back here again\u201d.<\/p>\n

Actually, it was the best tour we have ever done, because it was the first time on a big tour with all the big stadiums. It was the greatest timing for metal, in the middle of the 80s. Metal was so big\u2026<\/p>\n

That was the \u201dTrue As Steel\u201d tour?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, True As Steel, and Priest did the \u201dTurbo\u201d tour, and it was\u2026 like metal was so huge, everything was sold out. They treated us so good, we were treated like gold. I thought if I ever, ever have a support band myself, I wanna treat them the same way. And I really learned a lot from the Priest, and I must say I\u2019m forever grateful that we had this great opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember when you sang the chorus: \u201dStay Hard, Judas Priest\u201d, instead of \u201dTrue As Steel\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Did I do this? \u2026Wow! Yeah, probably it was towards the end of the tour, you know, you feel a little bit more comfortable, and then you do stuff like that\u2026 and was it there that I sent them some cakes on stage?<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, it was, and after the last song, Hell Bent For Leather, there were some sex dolls, and Priest had a robot on the stage\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeah, yeah, I remember\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

The dolls went up, hanging in the robot\u2019s hands, and then someone brought a couple of bicycles on the stage. The Priest guys, Glenn, for instance, tried to get on the bike, but his leather pants were so tight that he couldn\u2019t make it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeah, that\u2019s the problem for Metal Gods, yes\u2026 But it was awesome, it was the best tour, and I learned a lot. It was unforgettable. I remember that night, I wanted to say thank you to Judas Priest, but we didn\u2019t speak English that well back then, so I was meditating over \u201dWhat should I say, what should I say\u201d\u2026 and then I said one sentence, and it was like \u201dThanks for the spirit!\u201d\u2026 and that was actually 24 hours I was awake writing that one sentence. But it opened up the conversation, really. They were really super nice to us, everybody!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That must have been a big step for you as a performer? To go on tour with Judas Priest, because Warlock was just breaking through\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeah, Judas Priest, my favourite band of all times! It was 1986, and in 1987 with Dio \u2026ah, it was unbelievable, really, the 80s for me, every year there was something spectacular. First we did the Monsters Of Rock Festivals with Ozzy headlining, and Scorpions were there. Then we opened on the Judas Priest tour, and one year later on the Dio tour, and I must say those are the greatest memories of those couple of years. It was my first time in all these great countries. I had been in Belgium, Netherlands and England before, but never in places like Scandinavia or Spain \u2013 and you know all those metalheads in the south, it was brilliant!<\/span><\/p>\n

And later I wanted to say thank you to Priest in a proper way. That\u2019s the reason we made a cover of \u201dBreaking The Law\u201d on the \u201dClassic Diamonds\u201d album!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a really cool cover. You definitely brought something extra to the song, instead of just repeating the original version. I remember having cold chills going on my spine, when l heard it the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s cool! It\u2019s so tough to try to top something that\u2019s already so fantastic, so we thought to sort it somehow different, and I think the Priest guys liked that version, too!<\/span><\/p>\n

Whose idea was it to include Udo on the vocals?<\/span><\/p>\n

Actually, we were doing a video for Udo, and then he wanted to know what I was doing. I told we were making something quite different, an orchestral record, and he was interested. I asked if he would like to come by to Cologne\u2026 and later I asked if he would like to sing on this song. Then I played him the version of \u201dBreaking The Law\u201d, and he said, \u201dWow, let\u2019s do it\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a bit later, in 2008, you shared the stage with Priest, singing \u201dBreaking The Law\u201d in D\u00fcsseldorf?<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh yeah! Actually Rob said, \u201dHey, wanna sing \u201dBreaking The Law\u201d with me?\u201d And I told him \u201dI have sung this song a hundred thousand times before, but really can\u2019t remember the lyrics, so please no\u201d… Then I was standing there by the monitor desk watching the show, and he came by, handed me the microphone and said \u201dOk, you\u2019re on!\u201d\u2026 D\u00fcsseldorf, my hometown\u2026 but it went fine, and the fans liked it. I\u2019m still a big fan, you never lose that. I still feel like a 14-year-old, that\u2019s Priest, you know\u2026 That\u2019s awesome!<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s great to hear we\u2019re all humans\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yeah, I\u2019m still a metalhead, you know.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s you\u2019re favourite Priest song?<\/span><\/p>\n

My favourite song\u2026 I would say it\u2019s \u201dBreaking the Law\u201d for me. I love it so much, that\u2019s my favourite song, yeah\u2026 but amongst many, many others…<\/span><\/p>\n

Is it going to be in the setlist today?<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know yet how many songs we can do today, \u2019cause it\u2019s only 60 minutes. We have to think about the encore list\u2026 sometimes the sing-along part in the set takes longer than expected, when people are so into it. Sometimes, you know, we have to drop a song or two\u2026 Let\u2019s see how it goes tonight!<\/span><\/p>\n

We just did an autograph session, and so many songs were requested. I said, \u201dYeah, yeah, we\u2019re gonna play it\u201d, and then realised we\u2019ve only got 60 minutes. That\u2019s a short set. Usually when we go on tour we play two and half hours, then you get all the songs\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now two years since your last studio album \u201dFear No Evil\u201d. When should we expect to hear some new Doro material?<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re now in the process of making. We\u2019ve already made a couple of songs, so songwriting is going very good. I think it will come next year\u2026 got some great ideas\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s one song for Ronnie James Dio, it\u2019s called \u201dHero\u201d. We just demoed it, and it\u2019s really nice. I think it\u2019s going to be something important on the album\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And later this summer you\u2019re going to tour with Dio\u2019s Disciples?<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, in Spain and Italy. I\u2019m filling in for Ripper Owens. The 29th of June is the first show, and I\u2019m now practising all the lyrics. There\u2019s so many lyrics, and I want to do good for the fans, and for Ronnie\u2026 I\u2019m so excited about it, it\u2019s such a big honour. We all love Ronnie, and we toured so many times together\u2026 Actually the last time we played together was when he was doing \u201dHeaven And Hell\u201d, maybe one and a half years ago\u2026 Well, I\u2019m still so shocked\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, I think everybody is.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think nobody will ever get over it. In 2000 we did a great tour together with Ronnie. It was so great \u2019cause metal had just come back. In America metal was not doing good at all for ten years, in the 90s, between 1990 and 2000. We did this tour together with Ronnie, and it was so nice. We became very good friends. On the \u201987 tour, we didn\u2019t speak English that well, so we didn\u2019t have long conversations\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

So the next album will be out maybe next year, in 2012?<\/span><\/p>\n

Hopefully in the beginning of next year. We\u2019re on tour so much, so it\u2019s hard to find time. Now we do all the festivals, and in October we do a long tour in Europe. In December another German tour, and then I\u2019ll start, like, polishing the record. There\u2019s never enough time in a day\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, and unfortunately it seems that we are also running out of time, so thanks a lot for this interview, and for sharing your memories with the Steel Mill!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

<\/strong>Warlocks fourth, and final album. Songs like \u201cAll We Are,\u201d \u201cI Rule The Ruins,\u201d \u201cMetal Tango\u201d and \u201dFur Immer\u201d have stayed in Doro\u2019s setlist for years. It also features Cozy Powell as a guest drummer for few tracks.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nCalling The Wild (2000)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>The latter day gem in Doro\u2019s catalogue. \u201cCalling The Wild\u201d features \u201cKiss Me Like A Cobra,\u201d \u201cBurn It Up\u201d and \u201cDedication\u201d \u2013 all which stand proud against any old Warlock classic. Plus there are excellent cover versions of \u201cWhite Wedding\u201d and \u201cLove Me Forever.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nClassic Diamonds (2004)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>\u201cClassic Diamonds\u201d was collaboration with The Classic Night Orchestra, which reworked some of her earlier songs with symphonic and acoustic arrangements. Right from the scorching opener \u201cI Rule The Ruins\u201d the combination is true marriage made in metal heaven. Hits follow each other, highlights too numerous to mention but special credit must go to utterly brilliant reworking of Judas Priest\u2019s \u201cBreaking The Law.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nTrue As Steel (1986)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Third album by Warlock, and somewhat shadowed by band\u2019s debut and \u201cTriumph And Agony\u201d released year later. Regardless, it remains a metal standout.<\/span> This album has their first success outside of Europe and includes several underrated tracks and of course the immortal title song.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nDoro (1990)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>This one was originally Doro\u2019s second official solo album after the split with Warlock. It was recorded with US players and produced by Kiss\u2019 Gene Simmons and Tommy Thayer. Simmons also wrote four songs for the album, one \u201cSomething Wicked This Way Comes\u201d was a rejected Kiss master from 1980\u2019s. The album didn\u2019t break Doro in the States but that didn\u2019t lessen its appeal with the fans. The more commercial approach resulted in much smoother and polished effort but songs like \u201cUnholy Love\u201d have stood the test of time.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nLove Me Forever (2000)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Not exactly a guest appearance since the version of Mot\u00f6rhead\u2019s first classic ballad appears on Doro\u2019s own \u201cCalling The Wild.\u201d However sang as a duet with Lemmy himself, this song has eerie quality that shouldn\u2019t go unnoticed by any Mot\u00f6rhead or Doro fan. The gritty voice of Lemmy and Doro’s slightly more melodic delivery fit in together perfectly.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
